About Mitty James

As a child I seem to remember not minding too much what I wore; I certainly wasn't concerned with fashion and my mother and others like her made many of our clothes themselves. Looking back, I loved the way we were dressed although sometimes we all matched a little too much. As we grew out of them, our clothes were packed up and put away either for the next in line or for when the grandchildren arrived. My mother took pride in her sewing and I have vivid memories of her sitting at her old Singer sewing machine making many of the outfits that have inspired me today. And now it seems that some of us are either too busy or lack the inclination to follow in these footsteps.

In the 70's we, (my brothers and sisters) all wore towelling on the beach and I was very keen for my children to continue this tradition. Unable to find anything remotely similar, I decided to set up on my own and from a purpose built cupboard in the playroom, with two young children and a third on the way, I launched Mitty James in 2000.

Six years later and spurred on by a hugely supportive, long suffering family the towelling range has expanded and new collections have been launched. We introduced beautiful cotton, 50's inspired swimwear first and then a classic range of Summertime daywear. And for this Spring/Summer we have linen and cotton daywear offset by simple cotton knitwear in shapes and colours to suit all ages. Our range of lycra swimwear has been brilliantly received by shops at home and abroad and sits alongside our hoodies perfectly. Smocked dresses, (like the ones my mother made) also make a first time appearance.

Bursting with ideas for the future, the Company has a long way to go. But Mitty James will always remain firmly on the beach and will hopefully become a part of your children's everyday wardrobe too.
